Day 2: John 4-6

The Kingdom
Today’s reading is filled with Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom of God. He tells the Samaritan woman that He alone has the key to water that will fill you and never leave you thirsty. He heals the officials son proclaiming that there is more to it than just a sign. Signs are indicators of a greater reality… the kingdom is at hand! He heals the sick, because in his kingdom there is no sickness, no disease. He pleads with those who are angry about healing on the sabbath to see that God not only heals, but he can and will raise the dead! He feeds the 5,000 because in his kingdom no one goes hungry. He walks on the water, because he is the one who made the water and even nature perceives her king. He pleads with the crowds who have comeback for more food to see past the filling of their stomachs and fill their souls.
Only six chapters in and anyone can see that the gospel writer John understood Jesus to be God in the flesh walking among humanity. Constantly there is an appeal to Christ as being from Heaven. Not only is the kingdom at hand, but the King is at hand!
Application: We live in the shadow of sin. Not all is as it should be. Not all is as it will be. Have you ever willingly submitted your life to the kingship of Jesus? If you have, are you advancing his kingdom? Are you proclaiming the good news? Are you feeding the hungry? Are you helping the helpless?
